Pip Read

Name: Philippa Read (most people call me Pip)

Occupation: Clerk, cyclist

When I was a kid: I am the oldest of four children and being the only girl I learnt to do things for myself, especially after my three brothers used me as the test driver for a few dodgy billy carts.

I'd love to meet: I don't have any ambition to meet anyone famous.

When and why did you become interested in cycling?: I used to ride to school and stuff, then in 2000 I purchased a bike from the local shop, just to get fit, meet some people in the same town that I live in and it just sort of grew from there.

What do you think you get out of cycling?: Originally it was just to get fit, I now ride every day to work, I compete in club and open events, I am involved in encouraging other women to ride and compete, I am currently Australian Masters Road Champion, Victorian Masters Road Race Champion and Victorian Masters TT Champion.

On average how many kilometres do you ride a week and with whom?: I like to do at least 300-350k's per week this depends on which part of my training program I'm in, quality not quantity is the way I usually train, I usually ride on my own but depending on my program I like to ride with some local bunches that are made up of mostly racing cyclists.

Describe you most memorable ride?: While riding with a friend on a very quiet back road about four years ago we crossed over a bridge early one Sunday morning and my friend saw something in the water below...we spent the next 10 minutes or so watching a platypus.

Give us a description of a ride you would rather forget?: I'm sure there are a few but the one that springs to mind, racing in the Mt William classic last year was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. It was the most unorganised race that you could imagine, it started in a different place than advertised, the organisers then announced that the distance had been changed and included an extra climb, it rained, and without notice to competitors they had not organised transport back to the start point (where all the cars were parked). I found a lift with another competitor.

What is your favourite post cycle beverage?: Strong coffee, or two, or three.

What is your favourite cycle energy food?: I am vegetarian and basically live on pasta, but have found rice to be excellent, and I really like anything sweet.

How do you cope with cold winter mornings?: I live in Victoria and it seems like we get at least six months of cold mornings so I rugg up with ¾ bib knicks, thermal undershirts, depending on how cold it is, either long sleeves or arm warmers usually with a wind breaker top, head band, warm gloves and shoe covers…..a vision of the Michelin man springs to mind.

Is there anything that can be done to improve the on road relationship between cyclists and motorists?: It has to work both ways, we both need to obey the rules, we both need to know the rules, we as cyclists need to ride in a predictable way, and just plain sharing.

What advice can you give those who are thinking of taking up cycling?: Do it, don't think it….I could go on for ages…….another time.

Experience has taught me: You don't need brakes…..they only slow you down.

Who inspires you the most?: My partner.

What is your life/cycle philosophy?: (life) if I can help someone in need I will, (cycle) have a goal and achieve it.

I often daydream: At work cos I would much rather be outside on my bike.

When I am not cycling I am: looking after my family (partner two dogs and bird).

When all else fails: have a go anyway.
