Megan Greer
Name: Megan Greer
Occupation: Cardiac Studies Coordinator for a Melbourne based Radiology Group
When I was a kid: One of my fondest memories is riding around the front of our house towing a skateboard and sibling. Later casual rides along the Yarra on my sister's Malvern Star.
I'd love to meet: Weary Dunlop, words can not describe the events of this era.
When and why did you become interested in cycling? I took up riding about two and a half years ago at the encouragement of a girlfriend. Started riding with a local group of female cyclist's and never looked back.
What do
you think you get out of cycling? I now have grown up kids
and have a new lease on life. I get plenty of exercise, the adrenaline
rush of fantastic rides and spend quality time with my hubby and good
friends.
On average how many kilometres do you ride a week and with whom? I work full time so weekends are dedicated to riding, weather prevailing. We aim for 80km - 100km rides.
Describe you most memorable ride? My husband and I recently did a cycling tour in Vietnam. On more than one occasion I remember thinking "there is nothing else I would rather be doing than this". Big statement!
Give us a description of a ride you would rather forget? I like to say bad rides are character building but I do loose enthusiasm in heavy downpours.
What is your favourite post cycle beverage? Usually get home and flick the kettle on, another coffee!
What is your favourite cycle energy food? Start the morning with oats and honey and often have some protein powder. For the longer rides I put electrolytes in my first water bottle.
How do you cope with cold winter mornings? No worries. I have a merino underlay top and a good warm winter jacket. Cycling boot covers are a must they keep you feet warm and dry. It is a good idea to have full gloves and something to keep the ears warm.
Is there anything that can be done to improve the on road relationship between cyclists and motorists?
Cyclist must obey the road rules like drivers. There are a minority out there that give us all a bad name. Improved bike lanes with regular sweeping of the paths, we often have to move out of our bike lanes due to the rubbish and glass over the bike lanes.
What advice can you give those who are thinking of taking up cycling? Start with an experienced bike rider if you can, they will pass on bike rules and regulations and show you what hazards are out there. Web sites and bike magazines are also a wealth of information. Clipping in can be scary at first so start in a quiet area with no cars. Butt crème the best invention ever!
Experience has taught me that: You can do all the preparation in the world and have a crap ride! You can have the worst preparation ever and have a fantastic ride!
Who inspires you the most? Anyone that's better than me. Means I need to try harder to keep up.
What is your life/cycle philosophy? Do as much as you can while you can, being a nurse I see a lot of illness. We need to keep healthy and active to try and ward off what life might throw at us.
I often daydream about: Having heaps of money, no mortgage and cycling my way around the world.
When you are not cycling you are…. Usually working, running a household being a daughter, mother, wife, sister etc.
When all else fails: Chill out with a class of wine a good movie.
