Kelly Linden
Name: Kelly Linden
Occupation: Lecturer/Physiologist
When I was a kid: I used to ride my bike everywhere
I'd love to meet: a coach who had the magic formula
When and why did you become interested in cycling? As rehab from running injuries in 2001.
What do you think you get out of cycling? I really enjoy the great experiences you can have, such as the Tour de Timor. Racing is also really, really fun!
On average how many kilometres do you ride a week and with whom? Approx 350, many of these are solo as winter training buddies are hard to find in Mount Beauty. Quite a few of these kilometres over winter were ridden on my little yellow ergo that sits in front of the fire.
Describe your most memorable ride? That would be the fire-trail ride from Falls Creek, across to Mt Nelse and back down to Mount Beauty over the Mt Bogong saddle. The view is constantly changing but always amazing. If you have not done it before add it to your bucket list!
Give us a description of a ride you would rather forget? Probably the head of that list is the main mountain stage in the 2009 Tour de Timor. I had terrible gastro and nausea all night and then had to lug my weak body up the steepest mountain I could imagine. When I got to the 30% section 3km from the top I found a river to lie in and had a good cry!
What is your favourite post cycle beverage? The correct answer here would probably be a banana smoothie, but apple cider is also pretty good after a long Sunday ride.
What is your favourite cycle energy food? Sticky date cake - it has everything you need and tastes delicious. You just need to find a good sticky date pudding recipe, replace half the butter for bananas, omit the butterscotch sauce and your set. It beats a Powerbar any day.
How do you cope with cold winter mornings? In Mount Beauty we sometimes have to ride in the snow, so layering is the only option. A good undershirt and windproof gloves really do make all the difference.
Is there anything that can be done to improve the on road relationship between cyclists and motorists? I always follow the road rules and try to be mindful of motorists, in the hope that they will pay me the same respect. A meter matters, but 3 meters would be lovely, thanks.
What advice can you give those who are thinking of taking up cycling? Before you start doing long rides buy a tub of chamois cream - then you will never look back (Aussie Butt Cream is awesome).
Experience has taught me: that there really is no substitute for training.
Who inspires you the most? People who manage their work life balance better than me!
What is your life/cycle philosophy? Pedal faster fool
I often daydream: about summer - I love the heat!
When you are not cycling you are: riding my horse, Miss Piggy, or walking Rosie the dog in the bush.
When all else fails: go for a ride and have some sticky date cake.
