Name: Jade Forsyth
Occupation: Insurance Broker
When I was a kid: I was a bit of a tomboy
I'd love to meet: someone who could stop me from getting old.
When and why did you become interested in cycling? Two and a half years ago, when some friends thought I'd like the adventure of the week long Coast to Coast Charity ride from Cairns to Karumba. I was then introduced to MTB'ing by a friend and found it perfect as I could fit it in around work and social life. I needed something I could do on my own also as all my friends were getting married and having babies. I tried a few other sports such as netball but could never really commit myself to them. Now I can't find time to do anything else!
What do you think you get out of cycling? Fitness, Lots of new friends & the sense of accomplishment when I finish a race/ride & the ability to eat foods I probably shouldn't.
On average how many kilometres do you ride a week and with whom? It varies greatly when MTB'ing it's more hours in the saddle than kms on the road. Normally about six hours a week and when training for a race 10-15 hours a week on either the road or mtb.
Describe you most memorable ride? How to choose, sooo many awesome adventures with friends. My favourite at the moment would be the Herberton 8hr I did Aug 2011. The trails varied so much with shailey, rocky and grassy sections, creek crossings and a scrape your bum on your rear wheel descent that all changed with a sprinkle of rain! It was a really interesting course which makes it more enjoyable when you are riding solo.
Give us a description of a ride you would rather forget? Day 1 of Tour de Timor 2010 135km in 35 degree celsius heat and a 20km hill to finish the day. Swollen feet, dehydrated and bad stomach ache from too many gels. Must admit I shed a tear after the race.
What is your favourite post cycle beverage? Trailmix Skinny Capp
What is your favourite cycle energy food? Bananas!
How do you cope with cold winter mornings? Booties, warm gloves and clothes. Its invigorating to be out and living life even if it is freezing!
Is there anything that can be done to improve the on road relationship between cyclists and motorists? Respect for each other and patience.
What advice can you give those who are thinking of taking up cycling? Do it! It's a great low impact sport. You can be a weekend warrior or an elite level cyclist.
Experience has taught me: that age and size often mean, smarter and stronger/ faster.
Who inspires you the most? People that overcome adversity to achieve their goals.
What is your life/cycle philosophy? Life is for living.
I often daydream about: winning tattslotto so I can choose to work a dream job two days a week and ride my bike and go on adventure holidays whenever I want.
When you are not cycling you are: going to movies, dinner with friends, reading, running and walking my dog and listening to Triple J.
When all else fails: I get back on my bike and keep riding despite the blood.
