Name: Aviva Gordon
Occupation: Emergency nurse and Midwife.
When I was a kid I loved riding my old bike and recall bending stacks of teaspoons used to take off tyres to change a tube.
I'd love to meet Ayan Hirsi Ali, the author of the book 'The Caged Virgin'.
When and why did I become interested in cycling? In my late 40's, overweight, watching the Athens Olympics track cycling and just knew I had to give it a go.
What do you think you get out of cycling? Passion, the joy de vie of life, friendships, space, challenges and fitness being the by-product.
I ride about 200km a week but more when training for a race e.g. half ironman. I ride with groups and friends and alone.
Describe my most memorable ride - My weekly slow recovery ride around the river stopping to watch the pelicans and dolphins and taking time to contemplate stillness.
My favourite post cycle beverage is a long black coffee with hot skim milk on the side.
My favourite cycle energy food is dried apricots.
How do I cope on cold winter mornings? Rug up in layers, never stop for coffee until I get home.
To improve the relationship between cyclists and motorists we need the education of both parties plus a dose of tolerance and a friendly smile and a thank you!
Advice to those thinking of taking up cycling - just do it, ask for help and enjoy!
Experience has taught me to listen to the masters, be humble to the learners and to be kind to myself.
Who inspires me the most? The women I coach, and the Para-Olympic athletes.
What is my life/cycle philosophy - just do it!
I often dream about being able to do one cycling holiday a year somewhere in the world.
When I am not cycling, I love gardening and reading.
When all else fails just remember that health is priceless!
