Adella Edwards
Name: Adella Edwards
Occupation: Cartographer, James Cook University
When I was a kid: We all got around our small town on bikes and by foot, it was just the way things were.
I'd love to meet : Lars Rasmussen, inventor of Google Maps
When and why did you become interested in cycling? When we migrated to Australia 15 years ago I wanted to decrease my ecological footprint as much as possible. I started to commute by bike, but I didn't fall in love with cycling until a few years ago. I had a cheap bike, and cycling was a 'chore'. I would never stick to it through the wet season, so I never got fully fit. Once I met some social cyclists, got a better bike and found the fun in cycling it changed my life.
What do you think you get out of cycling? Health and wellbeing, both mental and physical. And I can hoover down all the food I want!
On average how many kilometres do you ride a week and with whom? 250kms a week, mostly by myself as training/commuting. I like riding by myself best, because I can see and respond to all situations without worrying about the group. I don't love group riding unless I am with a small and experienced bunch I can really trust.
Describe your most memorable ride? I have had so many great rides! The Otago rail trail was pretty special though.
Give us a description of a ride you would rather forget? Any ride with angry drivers, but they are rare.
What is your favourite post cycle beverage? Coffee!
What is your favourite cycle energy food? Up 'n Go
How do you cope with cold winter mornings? Really badly! I own a ridiculous amount of warm gear for someone who lives in the tropics!
Is there anything that can be done to improve the on road relationship between cyclists and motorists? We need ad campaigns that humanise cyclists. As a society we need to make caring for each other into our first priority.
What advice can you give those who are thinking of taking up cycling? It isn't how far or how fast, it is doing it every day. Commit to that and the rest will take care of itself. That is why commuting is such a great way to make cycling a part of your life. You have to get to work!
Experience has taught me that: Great journeys are made of small steps
Who inspires you the most? After reading all the posts here, Women on Wheels!
What is your life/cycle philosophy? Fun is the most important thing.
I often daydream about: Food
When you are not cycling you are: Working, cooking, eating, sleeping.
When all else fails: Read the help files!
