National Ride To Work Day
The year seems to be flying past and I thought I would give you a heads up about the annual National Ride To Work Day on October 17. Previously run on a state-to-state basis the ride, now in its 14th year, is taking on national status.
A plethora of well-known CEOs have backed the National Ride To Work Day initiative. People such as Chip Goodyear from BHP Biliton, Rob Tickner from Australian Red Cross and Michael D'Ascenzo from the Australian Taxation Commission have joined with other high profile business community members to put their company's full support behind the day.
Darrell Wade, Intrepid Travel CEO, is going one step further and planning an International Ride to Work Day to include Intrepid's London and Auckland offices. The CEO joins Jane Crouch, Responsible Travel Manager, as a National Ride to Work Day Ambassador - promoting responsible travel at home and abroad!
People are being encourage to become 'workplace co-ordinators' for the event. All workplace co-ordinators will receive a free promotional kit and if you register by July 31, you have the chance to win great prizes.
National Ride To Work Day will have strong presence on the airwaves through its partnership with ABC local radio.
Individuals can register as participants and will be in the draw for prizes in each state.
To help get people at your work involved in the event here are a couple of
suggestions (thanks to Bicycle Queensland):-
Chat to your local bike shop, local cafes or bakeries about getting
involved.
Organise novelty prizes e.g 'person you would least expect to ride', 'best
decorated bike', 'best folded shirt' and 'best helmet hair'.
Try to get as many people involved in organising the event as you can.
Start by talking to other regular cyclists and encourage them to become
bike buddies.
Closer to the date, remind everyone to register - event he regular riders.
Be part of the National Workplace challenge.
Encourage your boss to ride to work.
Organisers are expecting over 22,000 riders to register for the event - that's a lot of lycra!
National Ride to Work Day will stimulate over 10,600 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas savings in the first three years - that's more than 2 650 hot air balloons full of CO2!
