First 'Gran Fondo' event entries now open
The first 'Gran Fondo' ride to be held in Australia will include 40km of the iconic Great Ocean Road as part of the route. Organised by the Amy Gillett Foundation the 120km Gran Fondo is a mass participation event with a competitive edge designed for all levels of cycling ability.
The event organisers said Australia has never staged a mass participation road riding event with an absolute focus on safety, whilst offering a competitive element to cater for Australia's rapidly growing population of recreational riders.
'Some ride for the satisfaction and pride of just making it to the finish line. Others want to improve upon their previous times or to challenge themselves, their friends and their team mates. And some ride to win!'
'This is a timed event, with prize money for age group and team placegetters. There are only 3000 places available.'
To be held on Sunday September 18, the ride will leave Lorne and finish at Benwerrin.
The event will also include 'Amy's Great Ocean Road Ride', a 14km journey on closed roads with only 1000 places available. Entries opened on June 6. The ride route will leave Lorne at 9am to travel along the iconic Great Ocean Road to Cumberland River and return.
